Where can I get help starting my business?

There are three main places to try first: the public library, the phone book and the local colleges.

  • The library usually has a business resource section. Just ask the research librarian to help you find information about starting a business or about the type of business you want to start.
  •
  • Next, try the blue pages of your phone book. Under United States Government, look up Small Business Administration. That would list the location of the nearest SCORE office. SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) is made up of retired executives who volunteer their time to help people with their businesses. From them you can get all sorts of information and help. Another SBA Agency that could help would be the Small Business Development Center. Usually they are located at colleges like UCONN, but some are free-standing offices, like the one in Stamford, CT.
  •
  • Finally, most colleges offer some sort of entrepreneurship or small business training through their extension or continuing education offices.
  •
  • City or Town Hall will have regulations and zoning requirements, while Chambers of Commerce can also give you direction.
  •
  • Your state representative's office or your secretary of state's office can also get you the information you need about doing business in your state.
  • Finally, read the business section and local business calendars of your local newspapers to see what sort of business meetings are being held. Go to some and start networking.
